During the 1920’s 1930’s world-class examples of Spanish Revival architecture were being built by the leading architects of their time. It is widely known that the architectural firm of Greene & Greene designed and built some of their finest examples of Arts and Crafts homes in Pasadena just after the turn of the century.
However, it was during the 1920’s and 1930’s that architects such as Wallace Neff, George Washington Smith and Reginald Johnson built the Spanish inspired architecture that dominated the wealthy estates in areas such as Pasadena, San Marino, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Montecito. As well as large estates, Spanish influenced architecture swept through many regions of Southern California with homes and institutions of all sizes built in the Mediterranean style. In some areas whole communities were established in the Spanish Revival fashion.
Furniture manufacturers quickly realized the need to furnish these homes with appropriate styling and reproduction Spanish Revival furniture became an important line for many furniture producers. Although much of the furniture produced during this period was Americanized and generic in the Mediterranean style there were manufacturers that produced high quality reproductions in the true 16th and 17th century Spanish tradition.
